Après une longue carrière dans la magistrature gantoise sous le règne des Archiducs, Jean van Havre (1551-1625), qui avait toujours fréquenté les cercles cultivés, apporta sa contribution au domaine des belles-lettres avec une triple satire latine érudite, volontiers moralisatrice, dans laquelle il stigmatisait le vice pour conduire plus sûrement à la ''Citadelle de la vertu''. L’ouvrage, initialement publié en 1621, avait été revu et considérablement augmenté par son auteur quand la mort le surprit ; il revint à son ami anversois Gaspard Gevaerts de mener à bien l’édition définitive du texte aux éditions Plantin-Moretus en 1627. Les satires morales de van Havre ainsi que le panégyrique de l’homme par son contemporain Burgundius sont ici introduits et traduits pour la première fois, et publiés en regard du texte original ; un appendice, signé par Dirk Sacré et consacré à la correspondance entre van Havre et Gevaerts, clôt le présent volume.
The moral satires of van Havre introduced and translated for the first time
After a long career in the Ghent administration under the reign of the Archdukes, Jean van Havre (1551-1625) made his contribution to the field of literature with a triple satire in which he stigmatized vices and eulogized the virtues leading to ''La citadelle de la vertu''. After the original publication in 1621, van Havre revised and extended the book but it was his Antwerp friend Gaspard Gevaerts who took care of the definitive edition of the text published by Plantin-Moretus in 1627 after van Havre’s sudden death. The moral satires of van Havre and his eulogy to his contemporary Burgundius are here introduced and translated for the first time, and compared to the original published text. An appendix dedicated to the correspondence between van Havre and Gevaerts closes this volume.
